Not quite the Expected
“We don’t always want to do a room where somebody is being butchered and have the smell of blood…maybe we want lilacs.”
– Noah Bremer, Haunted Basement Director
Imagine walking into a dark room with the scent of popcorn and bubble gum. Just as you begin to wonder what is happening, bright lights hit your eyes and you find yourself on stage in front of an audience of demented clowns! Such was one scene in the Soap Factory’s Haunted Basement 2010.
Haunted Basement 2013
The smell of cotton candy lures you in.
The body odor reminds you of where you are!
Haunted Basement 2014
You see a horrifying image,
we see dozens of ways to creatively enhance
this scene with olfactory art & design.
Olfaction, more than other senses, has an immense power to evoke memories and transport us to places and times. The appropriate addition of odor to our environment pulls us in emotionally.
Our experience and knowledge of odors and human perception has fostered our innovation into olfactory art & design. Like lighting and sound, proper olfactory art direction, including scent selection, dispensing and timing, can add elements to create an ambiance, spotlight a moment, and otherwise immerse the audience into a scene.
Since 2005, St. Croix Sensory has been working with directors and artists to apply scent to their theatrical productions and art installations to enhance their creative productions. Our work has received international recognition as a top creative innovator in olfactory art and design.
