1992 MEETING MINUTES

24 June 1992
11:30AM – 1:30PM
Kansas City, MO

Peter Warner, Chairman called the meeting to order at 11:40AM.

24 In Attendance (see attached)

Pre-Agenda Items:

1991 Minutes were accepted

Warner noted that the new membership list must be forwarded to Steve Staskos by July 17, 1992.

Agenda Items:

  1. Substitutes for n-butanol and/or policy regarding future use of n-butanol as a standard were discussed. Discussion was led by Sam Cha and Paul Jann. Early discussion highlighted the disadvantage of discarding many years of experience with n-butanol should a new reference compound(s) be adopted.

As in past discussions among members regarding n-butanol as a standard, typical negative comments included:

    1. Chuck McGinley reported about 3% of his panel report headaches following testing.
    2. Sam Cha reported complaints about the relevance of butanol odor to typical environmental odors.
    3. Steve Ellis reported that in a recent testing approximately 10% of the panelists complained of headaches.
    4. Michael Rix reminded us that this issue had initially been brought to the attention of this group in 1978 - - a ceiling value should not be exceeded.

For positive input:

    1. Sam Cha has used butanol for years without problems.
    2. Paul Jann suggested introducing other candidate odorants to substitute for butanol.

A brief discussion followed Paul’s suggestion. Some negative reaction was voiced due to the complexity of using several reference odor standards. No motion was made, however.

A motion to study the possible adaptation of secondary butanol (2-butanol) as a replacement reference standard was made by Ralph Johnson. The motion was passed (14 pro, 3 con) after considerable discussion. Sam Cha agreed to reconvene and chair a subcommittee to consider substitute odor standard materials to include secondary butanol.

With 2 new volunteers the Intensity Reference Study Subcommittee includes:

Sam Cha – Chairman
Mark Bindbeutel
Steve Ellis
Paul Jann
Chuck McGinley
Martha O’Brien
Ed Switala

  1. The Draft "Table of Contents" for a generic Olfactometer Procedure was presented by Martha O’Brien. Suggestions from the floor included adding to the Table of Contents the area of "Sampling". The new title itself would also reflect this addition, i.e. "Guidelines for Odor Sampling and Dynamic Dilution Olfactometry." Martha will continue development of the Guidelines which upon completion will be forward to ASTM D-22 and E-18.
  1. The EE-6 Committee By-Laws were discussed and the membership voted (1 opposed) to add to the existing draft the words "control and regulation" to complete the last line in: Objectives of EE-6, Objective #3. A note passed from the by-laws copy forwarded to chairman and the secretary that p.2 was missing from the by-laws copy forwarded to Steve Staskos’ office in March 1992. This page will be included with the by-laws copy to reflect the addition voted upon by the Committee on June 24.
  1. Proposed Sessions for the June 1993 AWMA meeting, Denver, Colorado.

Two session topics emerged from the discussion:

    1. Odors and their Relationship to Toxicity
    2. Chair: Sam Cha, Dick Duffee

    3. International Consensus: Olfactometry
      Chair: Steve Ellis
  1. P. Warner communicated to the Committee the request of the Technical Council to consider sponsorship of an International Odor Specialty Conference for 1994 or 1995. The Committee agreed to consider 1995 as a possible target year.

The meeting was adjourned at 1PM

Respectfully submitted,
Steve Ellis
Arthur D. Little
