1994 MEETING MINUTES

22 June 1994
11:30AM – 1:30PM
Cincinnati, OH

Peter Warner, Chairman, opened the meeting at 11:30AM

Agenda:

  1. Because of his absence from the June 22nd meeting, Sam Cha, Subcommittee Chair, left a message to advise the EE-6 Committee that his findings regarding n-butanol and the proposed substitute 2-butanol indicate that odor response to n-butanol was linear over the lower concentrations (highest dilutions). In addition, Doug Anderson supplied the committee with a two-page report that included a graph showing a 2-butanol/n-butanol odor response comparison. The report will be distributed to the subcommittee for its review.
  1. Martha O’Brien reported on progress on the generic procedure for use of an olfactometer which will include the sample collection step. The procedure will be presented at the 1995 international specialty conference in Minneapolis.

Some discussion of the proposed procedure followed:

  1. Pete Warner identified a goal on the part of the EE-6 Committee to offer to the AWMA membership at the June 1995 meeting a one-half day session entitled "An Overview of Odor Measurement and Control Technology" in order to provide coverage to odor-related issues for the organization membership-at-large. Warner volunteered to chair, Sam Cha to vice-chair the session. Subject material would be general and eclectic since most EE-6 authors would reserve more technical and specialized material for presentation at the International Specialty Conference just a few months later in Minneapolis. Wayne Tutt, Gary Gruwell, Ray Porter, and Richard Pope identified their interest in presenting overview papers at this session. Sam Cha is interested as well. A Session Proposal Form was submitted by Peter Warner to the AWMA Meetings Division showing the above title and projected authors.
  2. Bill Prokop distributed copies of the proposed Minnesota Odor Regulation and discussed its scope and implications.

  3. Bill indicated the due to other higher priorities, the Minnesota Pollution Control Association will not proceed with this revised regulation at this time. The revised regulation is based upon a nuisance criterion of 10 odor complaints.

Much discussion followed about the relevance of this regulation to the EE-6 mission. The general consensus was that providing assistance to state and local regulators was an important role of EE-6.

It was suggested that the specialty conference include a session on odor regulations, given its significance to EE-6.

  4. In the absence of Chuck McGinley, Program Co-Chairman of the 1995 International Specialty Conference, Jon Swanson (Conference Program Co-Chairman) described their progress on the Conference Speakers Program. Discussion of the Conference Title: Odors: Indoor & Environmental Air, which had been arrived at by the Conference Committee and provided to the National Headquarters was reviewed with the EE-6 Committee. EE-6 members suggested other titles such as: "Odors: An International Specialty Conference", or adding the term "Ambient Air" or deleting "Indoor Air". The Conference Committee agreed to take these suggestions under advisement, allowing that the original title had not already been entered into publicity information distributed by AWMA Headquarters. Jon Swanson acknowledged that the first Call For Papers would appear in the July issue of JAWMA and read from his notes a list of topics which would be included in this Call For Papers.

Adrianne Carolla, AWMA staff was presented at the meeting and indicated that the style guide and specific requirements would be sent by headquarters to the authors of the selected abstracts.

Bill Prokop asked about "exhibits" for the Minneapolis Conference and about the request on the part of the EE-6 Committee (June 93 meeting) for exhibits of equipment rather than publicity flyers. Warner replied that Linda Tanner, Minneapolis Conference General Chairman, was planning exhibits and that Warner had forwarded to her a copy of the 1993 EE-6 Meeting Minutes to reflect the EE-6 Committee input. Program Co-chairman Jon Swanson and Chuck McGinley had also seen this EE-6 Committee input. This input included:

At J. Swanson’s request, several members present indicated interest in participating in the ’95 International Specialty Conference.

  1. As the meeting was coming to an end, P.Warner observed that after his term of three years which ended in 1994, Vice Chairman, Martha O’Brien (Chairman 1995) would take over during next year’s meeting. It was therefore appropriate to take nominations for the position of Vice Chairman. Alex Gnyp nominated Ron Poustchi, Dina Gnyp seconded, Art Black moved that nominations be closed. With the only candidate, a voice vote elected Ron Poustchi, Vice Chairman. Steve Ellis agreed to continue as Secretary.
