1995 MEETING MINUTES

21 June 1995
11:30AM – 1:30PM
San Antonio, TX

Peter Warner (Chair 1994) and Martha O’Brien (Chair) opened the meeting at 11:45AM.

Ron Poustchi (Vice Chair) and Steve Ellis (Secretary) were absent. The minutes of the meeting as recorded by Warner and O’Brien are as follows:

The minutes of 1994’s EE-6 meeting were accepted with no changes.

Discussion of Agenda Items:

New Business (Part 1)

  1. Update on the International Specialty Conference:
  2. ODORS: INDOOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL AIR
    13-15 September 1995
    Bloomington, Minnesota

Melba Hensel, Local Planning Committee Member, updated attendees on the events planned for the September International Odor Conference.

    HIGHLIGHTS:

Chuck McGinley, Technical Program Co-Chair described the conference program. Copies of the conference program are now available from AWMA.

HIGHLIGHTS:

OLD BUSINESS

  1. Sam Cha (Chair of the Sub-Committee on n-butanol replacement) updated the committee on his recent work comparing panelists’ responses to 1-butanol vs. 2-butanol. His preliminary findings show the curves to be similar. Doug Anderson and Chuck McGinley have also been investigating this comparison. Doug (who was absent from the meeting) is scheduled to present a paper on this subject at the specialty conference in September. It was suggested that the subcommittee members convene following the presentation of this information. A breakfast meeting on Friday, September 15th was suggested. Sam Cha will contact his subcommittee members and arrange an informal meeting.
  2. There was a break in the meeting for group introductions.
  3. Martha O’Brien (Chair of the Sub-Committee on standardization) updated the committee on the "Guidelines for Odor Sampling and Measurement by Dynamic Dilution Olfactometry" document. There have been no changes to the document since the revised draft May 1993. The issue of flow rate has yet to be resolved. Martha is presenting a paper at the September conference which specifically deals with the effect of sample flow rate in determination of odor thresholds. The paper will be followed by a "round table" discussion which will involve an information exchange with both U.S. and international representatives. The European standard specifies a much higher flow rate (20 liters/minute) than is currently being used by most olfactometers in the US.

Martha agreed to supply a copy of the paper she presented at the 1994 annual AWMA conference which summarizes the Guideline document to-date to any EE-6 committee member who is interested. The paper is entitled: Standardization of Odor Measurement Techniques (94-TP52.07). If interested, please contact Martha O’Brien at (203) 243-9380 or (203) 243-9431 [FAX].

NEW BUSINESS

  1. The group discussed and suggested topics for the Odor Session(s) at next year’s annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee – June 23-26, 1996.

I am aware that the following two session proposal forms were submitted by Ray Porter:

Note: if any other proposal forms were submitted with the EE-6 as the sponsoring committee, please fax a copy to Martha O’Brien at (203) 243-9431.

  1. Steve Colome (AWMA Technical Council representative) addressed the group with some announcements regarding submission of next year’s proposal forms, that an updated committee roster is due to AWMA by July 15th (M. O’Brien), and that there was a meeting for all committee chairs that afternoon at 4PM (attended by M. O’Brien).
  2. Dave Benforado then addressed the group and provided us the copy of a "Tidbits of Tomah" publication which was dedicated to aspects of odor. Some facts…some fiction(?), but all quite entertaining.

Dave also brought up the possibility of committee members assembling an "Odor Bibliography." This would be accomplished by a computer search which could access all publications on odor issues (indexed into specific focus areas) over the past (20?) years. Much odor data exists on topics we are still struggling with and it would be extremely helpful to have it all "dug up" and organized into a database for easier access. It was discussed that this project might be well suited as a student project within a university. Alex Gnyp of the Univ. of Windsor volunteered to be the clearing house for people to send their personal odor bibliographies to. With a formal written request from the committee (M. O’Brien has supplied) he will develop a student project to compile all the information that he receives and assemble it all in a computer. Ton van Harreveld of Project Research Amsterdam BV volunteered his document list which contains many European publications. He will send it to M. O’Brien and she will forward to Alex. Anyone else with lists of odor publications please contact:

  1. Bill Prokop distributed a copy of the program outlined from the Odour Special Interest Group Workshop entitled "Policy, Regulation and Measurement" that he attended in May 1995. The program was sponsored by the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand. Terry Schultz of the University of New South Wales offered to forward a copy of the program’s proceedings to the committee.
  2. Terry Schultz also informed the group of the International Association on Water Quality (IAWQ). This association has a Special Interest Group on Volatile Atmospheric Emissions from Wastewater Systems. Although not mentioned in the title, this group is active dealing with odour emissions as well. He welcomed participation from any members of the AWMA EE-6 committee who may be interested.
