2. The 2003 minutes from the meeting in San Diego were reviewed.
3. Session Proposal Forms. Four sessions were proposed for the 2005 annual
conference in Minneapolis.
a. Economic and Air Emission Issues of Ethanol Production. Session Chairs: Charles McGinley, St. Croix Sensory and Mike Valentine, EarthTech. This will be a panel session of invited speakers.
b. Community Odor Monitoring, Nuisance Assessments, and Odor Modeling. Session Chairs: David Restaino, Fox Rothschild and Vladimir Kogan, Orange County Sanitation Districts.
c. Odor Quantification and Control. Session Chairs: Dick Pope, Malcolm Pirnie & Anna Bokowa, Canadian ORTECH Environmental.
d. Chemical Detection Sensors and Electronic Noses. Session Chairs: Martha O'Brien, Odor Science & Engineering and Mike McGinley, St. Croix Sensory.
Two other sessions were proposed for 2005 with EE-6 as a co-sponsor. These two sessions were submitted by a new Inter-Technical Committee Task Force on Agricultural Environmental Issues (ITF-10).
a. Air Emissions from Poultry and Livestock Buildings. Session Chairs: Larry Jacobson, University of Minnesota & Al Heber, Purdue University. This will be a panel session of invited speakers.
b. Air Emissions from Poultry and Livestock Facilities. Session Chairs: Steve Patrick, Tyson Foods and Jacek Koziel, W. Texas A&M University.
Note that EE-6's own, Mike McGinley, is the Technical Program Vice-Chair for the 2005 conference in Minneapolis.
4. ASTM International: Mike McGinley currently is a member of the ASTM
International E18 Sensory Evaluation committee. ASTM completed a review of the
threshold standard E679 as part of its scheduled required 5 year review. Official
voting was completed in April 2004. The standard was approved with some minor
revisions, including the addition of one new odor testing example and an example
of the threshold of a taint in beer.
The Intensity Standard, E544-99, is now up for its five year review. The plan
is for this standard to be balloted for reapproval as is. Voting is expected
to take place in July 2004.
Michael Rix and Anna Bokowa expressed their concerns for health issues related
to the sniffing of the n-butanol standards. There was further discussion the
use of this standard in practice. Rix, Bokowa, and several others present felt
that some attention should be given to this standard to consider how it is currently
used and what alternative methods exist for determination of odor intensity.
5. Olfactometry Standards: Mike Lannan presented his plan for EE-6 to
take the lead in reviewing the 2003 European olfactometry standard (EN13725)
and comparing it to the current ASTM standard (E679-04) and the EE-6 Guidance
Document. The goal would be to arrive at a final consensus for moving forward
with a North American standard which would address more of the issues presented
in the European olfactometry standard. Mike Lannan will lead a committee to
carry out this objective. It was decided to handle this with a two step process.
Step 1. Martha O'Brien will lead a subcommittee of lab personnel who will review
the standards and provide information about the clear differences between the
two standards.
Step 2. The rest of the EE-6 committee, and others in the industry (WEF Air
Quality Committee) will review the product of step 1 along with the specific
standards. This group will then work to draft recommendations for a new North
American standard or direction for discussion of a global standard.
6. Future AWMA Conferences: Future AWMA annual conferences include:
2005 in Minneapolis, 2006 in New Orleans, and 2007 in Pittsburgh for celebration
of the 100th Annual Conference.
The meeting adjourned at 12:30 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Michael McGinley
