3. Recent Conferences

AWMA Environmental Nuisance Conference (odor, noise, dust and light) was held in Toronto, ON in February 2008. This conference was attended by over 150 particpants from industry, government and private consultants from throughout the U.S. and Canada.

WEF/A&WMA 2008 Odors and Air Emissions Specialty Conference was held April 2008 in Pheonix. There were over 400 people in attendance, who participated in 12 technical sessions involving more than 70 papers. There were 30 exhibitors/sponsorts of the event. Planning is started for the next conference scheduled for 2010, likely in the southeastern US. The EE-6 Odor Committee sponsored a workshop at this conference entitled: Global Perspectives on Odor Policy and Regulation. This workshop was well attended with over 40 participants. A second workshop on Collection Systems was held by the WEF Air Quality Committee.

4. Upcoming Conferences

NOSE - Environmental Odor Monitoring & Control
Rome, Italy - 6-8 July 2008

IWA 3rd International Odour Conference
to be held 8-10 October 2008 in Barcelona Spain

2010 WEF/AWMA Odor and VOC Specialty Conference
Location to be determined.

5. Odor Sampling - Update Discussion

There was further discussion about the subcommittee on odor samling methods. Minimal actions were taken in the past year; however Anna Bokowa prepared a revision to the Odor Sampling and Measurement Guideance Document in order to begin to outline what changes are desired. These suggested revisions are available here: Suggested Revisions by Anna Bokowa (June 2008)

Ray Porter and Larry Hottenstein continue to wish to participate in this subcommittee on sampling methods.

Mike McGinley noted that he is aware there is a draft German standard that is out for review, however, it is only available in German. Mike learned that a final standard is expected in late 2009 and this standard will likely be looked at strongly by any task group involved in review and revision of EN13725 in coming years. Mike cautioned that we would not need to reinvent the wheel on some of the methods the German's are already working on, however the document will also serve as a foundation for discussing differences in methodologies used in the U.S. and Germany/Europe.

There was discussion that an OdorWiki (on-line dictionary) would be helpful to create. The subcommittee will consider that as they look at add definitions to any new sampling guideance document or revised sampling and measurement guideance document. The WEF Air Quality Committee would likely be very interested in this idea.

The meeting adjourned at 1:00 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,
Michael McGinley
Committee Chair
