1999 MEETING MINUTES
23 June 1999
Convention Center Room AC-260
11:30AM 1:30PM
St. Louis, MO
The meeting opened at 11:40AM
Ron Poustchi (Chair) was present. Michael Lannan (Vice-Chair) and Martha OBrien (Secretary) were both absent from the meeting. Michael McGinley volunteered to record the minutes.
Everyone present introduced himself or herself. A sign-in sheet was passes around the room. An attendance list is included with these minutes.
The minutes from the 1998 EE-6 Annual Meeting in San Diego were approved.
OLD BUSINESS
Martha OBrien (subcommittee chair) was not present at the meeting. Nor were any subcommittee members. As far as anyone present knew, this document is still in "draft" status.
Chuck McGinley stated that he plans a paper for the WEF 2000 Odor Specialty Conference regarding a study comparing presentation flow rates. He hopes to release this paper in January for early review for discussion at the WEF odor conference. C. McGinley suggested some action be taken by the committee in Salt Lake City at the 2000 AWMA Annual Meeting.
Mike McGinley presented information from a paper he wrote and presented at the WEF Annual Conference in Orlando, October 1998. The paper was a comparison of US and European Standards. M. McGinley presented the group with a table comparing features in the new draft CEN standard to those in the ASTM Odor Standard and the EE-6 Guidance Document. This table is included with these minutes as an attachment.
Tom Mahin (sub-committee chair) was not present at the meeting.
Mike McGinley gave an update on the EPA "Health Effects of Odors" Workshop held in April 1998 and reviewed at the EE-6 meeting in 1998 in San Diego. M. McGinley stated that the workshop proceedings have not been released. The last he heard the proceedings had been completed and were being sent to attendees for review before publication. He will keep the committee informed of the status of this publication.
Brad Striebig (Penn State University) suggested a discussion on regulations be held in a panel session at the WEF 2000 Odor Specialty Conference. Chuck McGinley (WEF 2000 Technical Program Co-Chair) took this suggestion under advisement and felt this session would be a strong one.
WEF and A&WMA could not agree on terms for a joint conference. It was determined during 1998 that the EE-6 Committee would yield to the WEF "Odors" Committee and support a WEF 2000 Odors Specialty Conference.
Chuck McGinley informed the group that he is a Technical Program Co-Chair with Tom Mahin. The conference information is:

ABSTRACTS DUE: 25 August 1999
PAPERS DUE: 20 December 1999
Sam Cha (Sub-committee Chair) was absent from the meeting. Ron Poustchi stated that Sam informed him over the phone before the meeting that the ASTM Committee decided against adding 2-butanol as an alternative intensity reference odorant. Instead they decided they would add a "Health Advisory" to the beginning of the standard.
Mike McGinley volunteered to speak with Sam Cha and Steve Ellis (rumored to be on the ASTM Committee and EE-6 member) to learn more about the specifics of the decision and to request a written statement from the ASTM Committee.
The EE-6 Committee members present discussed the idea of releasing a "White Paper" from the committee which would promote 2-butanol as an alternative. This paper would include the references to comparison papers and recipe formulas for the reference concentrations. No final decision was made, however, the group agreed to move forward on this issue at the AWMA 2000 Annual Conference in Salt Lake City.
NEW BUSINESS
A&WMA Representatives visited each of the committees. During their visit to the EE-6 Committee Meeting the representative discussed with the members in attendance the status of A&WMA and current issues being discussed at headquarters.
The representative stated that the financial status of A&WMA has improved. They also stated that there have been discussions amongst the A&WMA board members about possibly changing the A&WMA Annual Meeting format. For example, one alternative could be regional conferences. However, the representative stated that this is not a change to happen quickly as contracts are signed for Annual Conference locations through 2004.
The representative stated that all A&WMA members must watch the progress of these discussions and get involved by writing to the incoming president Bob Hall at bhall@awma.org and telling him what we would like to see as members.
Last of all, the representative stated that the Annual Meeting Session Topics would not be chosen the way they have been in the last few years (committees try to fit A&WMAs session lists). Instead it would be returned to the old way where committees submit session suggestions and then take FULL responsibility to get papers for those sessions! All members present were very pleased by this change!
The following session topics were submitted by the EE-6 Committee and ALL were accepted
by the AWMA Technical Program Committee:
| EE-6a | Odor Management and Control Chair: Ron Poustchi - BEK/Terranext Vice-Chair: Joao De Assuncao - Univ. of Sao Paulo & MacKenzie Univ. |
| EE-6b | Application of Biofiltration for Odor Control: Successes/Failures Chair: Rakesh Govind - University of Cincinnati Vice-Chair: Richard Pope - Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. |
| EE-6c | Odor Control Strategies in the Industrial Sector Chair: Matthew Traister - OBrien Gere Engineers, Inc. Vice-Chair: David A. Wood - Bristol-Myers Squibb Company |
| EE-6d | Odor Management and Regulation Chair: Bradley A. Striebig - ARL Penn State University Vice-Chair: John A. Lytle - Burgess & Niple, Ltd. |
Mike McGinley informed the group that he had learned that the AB-7 Indoor Air Quality Committee was the first committee to open a home on the internet. This was done in early summer 1999. The site is located at http://www.chelsea-grp.com/cgl_awma.htm. Mike suggested that EE-6 be the second committee on the internet.
Mike volunteered to look into how AWMA handles committee web sites. However, he stated that he learned from the AB-7 Committee Vice-Chair that A&WMA could not support the design or server hosting of committee sites at this time. For the most part, this is due to the difficulty of coordinating updating the sites.
Mike stated that if it was true that A&WMA did not support committee web sites, then he could design and maintain the site while St. Croix Sensory could supply the site hosting on their server. Mike wants to get this site up and running as soon as possible to push ahead in sharing information before the WEF 2000 specialty conference and the 2000 A&WMA Annual Meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 1:20PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Michael McGinley
